While some have argued that To Kill A Mockingbird is outdated or wrongheaded in its inclusion of period typical slurs/characterizations， hatred of our fellow human beings is an ugly， disgusting thing， and if you're going to make a statement about it， then it needs to be depicted warts and all。 All meaning becomes lost when you present such material in a "sensitive" manner。 And Lee's approach worked， because nothing else surpassed its message of racial injustices， or its unbridled humanity and co While some have argued that To Kill A Mockingbird is outdated or wrongheaded in its inclusion of period typical slurs/characterizations， hatred of our fellow human beings is an ugly， disgusting thing， and if you're going to make a statement about it， then it needs to be depicted warts and all。 All meaning becomes lost when you present such material in a "sensitive" manner。 And Lee's approach worked， because nothing else surpassed its message of racial injustices， or its unbridled humanity and compassion towards society's outliers。 Racism is the theme and the pumping heart of this book， and yet， that's not all it is。 As we are shown our own shameful reflections of how we have historically treated people of color， Harper Lee also forces us to take a hard look at the demeaning of the Boo Radley's of this world。 Those that are different， awkward， or do not/cannot conform to the herd are thrown to the proverbial wolves。 We demoralize and dehumanize them。 Furthermore， there's still little to no credit given for the inclusion of the very obvious transgender character that is Scout Finch。 Written during an era where the word did not even exist， Scout is an incredible， honest representation of a trans boy， and my 15 year old self （also having read this at a time when the term transgender was absent from the English language） lit up like a Christmas tree with all our intrinsic similarities。 For all its perceived faults， to this day， egalitarian literature still walks in Mockingbird's footprints。 。。。more
